Developments over the Years


Craigshill:                                      Opened in 1966 for its first residents.

Cameron Iron Works:                  Opened in 1966

Craigs Farm:                                  Opened in 1968 as a Community Centre.

First Police Station:                      Opened in 1968.  Three houses in Elm Grove converted as a station.

The Mall, Craigshill:                      Opened in 1968.   Was the first covered shopping precinct in Scotland.

Livingston Rugby Football Club:   Founded 1968

Craigshill High School:                Opened in 1969 but alas it closed in 1996.  Demolished and now housing.
    
Craigshill Health Centre:           Opened in 1969

Livingston Fire Station:               Opened in 1969 by Tam Dalyell MP for West Lothian.  “I am quite certain that this                                        new fire station is not only an important thing for the people of Livingston but a                                                                 positive incentive for the New Town to grow and attract further industry.”

St Columbas Church:                    Opened in 1969.  First to be under Livingston Ecumenical Experiment.
 
Almond West Service Station:     Opened in 1970???  First Petrol Station in Livingston.

Mews Theatre:                              Opened in 1971. Theatre was built at the rear of the former Howden House.

Almond Valley Bridge and A899:  Completed in 1972

Howden Health Centre:                Opened in 1975. in what is now Braid House.  Now located at St John`s Hospital.

Almondvale Regional Centre:    Opened in 1977:  Fondly referred to as simply `The Centre` by the locals, it was the                                                         home to many retailers including Woolco, the `Co-op`, Presto, Travel Agents,                                                                 Jewellers and many more.

First Cinema:                                 Opened in 1977.  It was attached to the west end of the Centre just outside the                                                              entrance.  This was to allow its use when the Centre was closed.  It later became                                                          a Bingo Hall when the second phase opened in 1996.

The Forum:                                    Opened in 1978, was the venue for concerts and gigs but it was demolished.

Deans Community High SchoolOpened in 1978.   Jim Telfer, former Rugby Internationalist was Headmaster here.

Bus Station:                                  Opened in 1979 but was later relocated to Deans.

Inveralmond High School:           Opened in 1979  Originally thought to have been named James Young.

Police Headquarters of `F` Division of the Lothian and Borders Police:  Opened September 1980

Sidlaw House along with Pentland House:  Opened in 1980.

James Young High School:         Opened in 1983.  Named after James `Paraffin` Young`, famous Scotsman who                                                               patented the process of extracting oil from coal and types of shale.

Livingston South Railway Station:       Opened in October, 1984. by British Rail.

Livingston North Railway Station:      Opened March, 1986 at same time as the reintroduction of
                                                               Bathgate - Edinburgh passenger services.

St John`s Hospital:                       Opened in 1989.

Ambulance Depot:                        Opened in 1989

Livingston Heritage Centre now known as Almond Valley:    Opened in 1990.

Bubbles Leisure Centre:            Opened in 1993.  Now called Xcite Livingston Leisure Centre.

St Margarets Academy:               Opened in 1994.

Livingston Football Club:            Moved to Livingston in 1995.  The club was founded in 1943 as Ferranti Thistle,
                                                       a works team. The club was admitted to the Scottish Football League and                                                                        renamed as Meadowbank Thistle in 1974, and played its matches at Meadowbank                                                          Stadium in Edinburgh. In 1995, the club was relocated to Livingston and renamed.

Almondvale Centre Phase Two:   Opened in 1996.

Adambrae Cemetery:                     Established 1996.

McArthur Glen:                             Opened in 2000.

West Lothian College:                 Opened in 2001, being relocated from Marjoribanks Street, Bathgate.

McArthur Glen renamed Livingston Designer Outlet: 2002.

Asda/Walmart:                                Opened in 2002 as such.

Radio Station:                               Opened In 2004, Livingston & West Lothian got their first ever commercial local                                                            radio station, River FM.  

Civic Centre:                                  Opened in 2009
