Our Governance over the Years

When set up in 1962, the overseeing of Livingston New Town was carried out by the Livingston Development Corporation.

By the time, mid 1960s, when the first residents were moving into Craigshill, both the Midlothian and West Lothian County Councils had assumed responsibility for the provision of Education, Cleansing and Lighting, Policing, despite having no jurisdiction in the town.

Following the dissolution of the Livingston Development Corporation in 1996, Livingston lost its New Town status and was incorporated into West Lothian Council authority.

The Town`s council representatives are divided between Labour and Scottish Nationalists.

Livingston was represented in Parliament from 1966 up to June 1983 jointly by Tam Dalyell, West Lothian and Alex Eadie, Midlothian.

In June 1983 Livingston became a Parliamentary Constituency in its own right.

Robin Cook, incidently chosen as the labour candidate over Tony Benn, became the first M.P. for the Constituency.

Robin held the post up until his tragic death in 2005.  He was then succeeded by Jim Devine.  He in turn was deposed as the result of a  Parliamentary expenses scandal.

In the General Election of 2010, Graeme Morrice became the new Labour M.P.
